I have seen a number of questions circling around why one would go through all the trouble of designing their life and changing it all around. Before I continue I have to admit my bias here as one of the best ideas I have ever had was to completely change my life. Switch up everything that I could to suit my happiness, ultimately it is what started My Story Of I. The process wasn’t easy but more worth it than I could ever accurately explain. Anyways seeing that I have seen so many questions why you should design your life I decided to answer it. Here are all the reasons why you should without question design your life.
9 Best Reasons To Design Your Life
- Designing your life can create your happiness
Life is about a lot of things but one of the top 3 should be happiness. When building your life without actually designing it happiness can easily become an afterthought while it really should not be. There of course are a lot of things that can make you happy and/or contribute to your happiness. One of them is definitely your lifestyle and the activities included in your life. By designing your life you can influence both and so start actively creating your happiness.
When you design your life you pick and choose what you want to be part of your life. It would be mighty strange if you were to pick activities that make you severely unhappy! Especially since designing your life can be your ticket out of those activities. The more of those activities you can design out of your life the happier you of course can become. Another reason that should make you happy which is directly attached to this one is the fact that you created your own happiness by taking charge.
There are people who believe that happiness is something you find along the way. I ask how if the way you are going doesn’t make you happy? When you design your way then yes you’ll ‘’find’’ your happiness along the way. You’re not finding it though, you are actively creating it by stopping actively contributing to your unhappiness.
- Finally start living by the words of Oscar Wilde
I’m sure you have heard the infamous words by Oscar Wilde:
“To live is the rarest thing in the world. Most people exist, that is all.”

The unfortunate reality is that many people are existing alive instead of living life. This is an absolute shame. When you take your time to lovingly design your life you have few other options than to live. Truly live.
I’ll never forget the first time I truly felt alive. There’s no feeling like it. To be honest it is a feeling that should be mandatory to experience at least once in a lifetime. In my case my appreciation for life skyrocketed and it felt like I finally cracked the code of what life really was about. Out of all the convincing reasons to design your life, this is, to me, the most powerful one. Believe me, once you have felt truly alive there’s nothing quite like it. I really wish for all of you to experience it, at least once but hopefully for a lifetime.
- Enable you to start curbing future regret
One thing I highly recommend you do at least once in your life is to have a very deep conversation with someone significantly older than you. Ask them specifically if they have any regrets about life. I bet they do, as it is one that is commonly said. When you have been made aware of this situation it is, in my opinion, your imperative to not let that be you. Taking the warning signs of those that went ahead of you sometimes is a really good idea, and this is one of those times.

The ones you talked to might have regrets about life, but you don’t have to. Right now you still have an opportunity to make sure that all your one day plans become actual memories simply by planning them into your designed life. Of course it all isn’t as simple as stated here, but by actively taking charge of your life now you are 100% giving yourself more time and assurance to be able to accomplish the things you want to do and so curb any future regrets.
- Better your relationship with time
Time is one aspect of our lives that keeps going no matter what it is you do with your life. Whether you are living it or just existing through it, time does not stop. Ever. This means that the feeling that time is passing you by will only grow over time as more time passes. Simply because more time is lost and that time will never come back. The latter is a fact that remains true no matter what, even when you are living a life you love.
The moment you make a plan for your life you are actively going against that feeling. You actively are grasping your time and using it for things that matter to you when you work on the plan you designed. When you do, it will make that feeling of having time pass you by start dissipating. What other choice does it have? You are no longer just watching life, you have started participating and using your most precious possession.

- Curb FOMO with your life design
The fear of missing out or FOMO for short is a relatively new concept on the block but nonetheless a powerful player when it comes to messing up your entire life. People suffer from fomo because they are left wondering what could have been. I believe that one of the reasons people suffer from this is because of not knowing what they truly want out of life. The way to figure out what you want is to sit with yourself and figure it out, in other words sit with yourself and design your life. When you don’t everything that seems remotely fun for whatever unspecified reason will appeal to you and your FOMO will probably just keep growing.
One of the best and to my knowledge the only way to completely curb the fear of missing out is to do exactly what you are afraid of missing out on. However just randomly starting to do everything under the sun is really not a good plan in life, not even when you are actively planning your life. By not carefully organizing all your options you might create more moments where you suffer from the fear of missing out. When you design your life with care and thoughtfulness you can rest assured knowing that you are working on creating the moments you fear missing out on.
On another not unimportant note it might also make scrolling your feeds a much more calmer sensation because you don’t constantly feel that whatever friend/follower X is doing is something you need to do too.
- Get your life finally unstuck
My reason to design my life was to get my life unstuck. I couldn’t help but feel like I was doing the exact thing Robin S. Sharma told us not to do.
“Don’t live the same year 75 times and can it a life”
Robin s. Sharma
I am of course nowhere near 75 yet but had I not pushed the break real hard I might have made it to 75 with life stuck in the same various situations.
To get your life unstuck you need to figure out what it is that is making you feel this way and do something about it. The thought pattern of simply accepting that your life is as it is, has to be made a thing of the past. At the end of the day getting your life unstuck is one of those things that are simple but just not easy, not in execution nor in thought patterns.
When you start working on your life plan you are assured of one thing, your life will most likely start changing. These changes mean movement thus slowly but steadily your life can definitely become unstuck.
- Designing your life will help you find your life priorities
This one is closely tied to designing your life enlightening you once again about the time you have. When you start designing your life you will start realizing that a lot of things you are already doing and things you want to do are simply not important to you. This realization will mainly come from seeing everything written down. Plans written down give clarity and overview. It is exactly that overview in combination with your mortality that’ll help you prioritize what is important simply because you just can’t do it all.
It is because you can’t do it all that it becomes of vital importance to make sure to occupy your time with only things that you actually value. Of course you can’t just jet off to a tropical paradise and do literally nothing anymore but when you find your priorities you can change your life to create more time to do exactly that.
- Give yourself the opportunity to get what you want out of life
I think this one is right on the nose. If you don’t pursue what it is you want getting it becomes more difficult. I wouldn’t go as far as to say you won’t get it because of a variety of reasons. Life is complicated. However one thing is simple, one of the best chances you have at getting what you want out of life is to pursue it with all you got. A life plan helps tremendously with that.

- Lower your stress about life
Last but certain not least you should start designing your life because it can severely lower some of the stresses you have about life. When you get happier, more focused on what is important, using your time in ways that are beneficial to you, how can your stress level not lower? By planning your life and working on creating the life you designed you are actively cutting out so many things that are silently or loudly stressing you out. Your stress level must go down then.
I don’t want you believing that you’ll never ever be stressed again because that is basically impossible (if you know how though, let me know?! Thanks!) You can however eliminate a lot of them when you take control of your life. I do have to be honest and tell you that changing your life by design can bring its own stresses with it, but you have to believe me when I say the type of stress is completely different when it comes from a life that you truly want to live.
Now with all these reasons are you convinced to start designing your life? When you are, I can make it less stressful for you with the guide I wrote called ‘’Starter Steps To Creating A Life Story You Love’’. It holds all the best tips on how to design and change your life for the better forever.
The best decision I have ever made was to design and live a life I love, what is yours?
Love,
DCPR.
