It’s time that you get informed that there are more self-help resources than just self-help books. Though I have to admit they did make it onto this list. In order to help yourself change your life in any way or form it is, in my opinion, crucial to first explore your options before purchasing or sometimes even investing in one (self-help can sometimes be even more expensive than “traditional” help, but that’s conversation for another day) that doesn’t align with the way you prefer to get your information. Here’s a list with all the different types of self-help resources currently on offer in the world.
6 Different Self-Help Tools You Could Use
1. Self-help Books
We’re starting with one that everyone already knows as there are literally millions of them; self-help books.
Self-help books come in all kinds of ways of working. You have self-help books that predominantly explain the theories behind certain problems. Others are more self-help guides as they walk you through effective steps to take to help you help yourself. The last type of self help books you can find are ones that offer you a combination of the two above. Though I have to say these ones are not that frequent. Usually you get the theory and the guide you’re going to have to buy two books that are complementary made for each other.
My Story Of I has two self-help guides that can help you change your life permanently.
1. Starter Steps To Changing Your Life Story
2. Saving Effortlessly – Save money every month without stopping your fun lifestyle.
Also as is no secret to anyone if you’ve been with My Story Of I for a long-time I’ve read my fair share of self-help books. I made you a list of the ones that actually do help:
2. Self-help Workbooks
It might seem as if this is an overlapping item with the self-help books but it actually is not. Self-help workbooks are made even more practical than the guides. The full focus of the workbook is to get you to be active with the workbook via a series of exercises. Oftentimes there is just enough text to be found to explain the exercise.
You can find self-help workbooks as complimentary items to a guide but they also exist as complete stand alone items.

3. Self-help Courses
Self-help courses are the newest ones in the range of self-help tools that you can purchase. These courses are set up for you to go through an online lesson plan all by yourself. Usually they are recorded videos that you can watch and apply the principles in the videos to your situation and/or life as a whole.
You have courses where you do not interact with the instructors live at all, but you also have some that offer live Q&As for example or any other kind of live interaction.
These self-help courses can be offered as you alone follow the course without knowing who else is following it which is the most common setup. There are others where you are in contact with the other applicants via the course portal used. Though oftentimes this isn’t the case. If there are interactions offered with other applicants it’s usually within some kind of facebook group.
My Story Of I has just launched a module to help you tackle a common change your life problem: New Year’s Resolutions. In just 90 minutes you will walk away knowing exactly what to do to make your New Year’s Resolutions actually come true and so finally have yourself a successful year. –> The Successful Year Club will get you there!
4. Self-help Groups
Self-help groups are groups where people who are standing in the same shoes, thus facing the same situation, come together and offer each other support or guidance depending on the group. There are some that have been set up for accountability to reach a goal everyone involved wants to reach. Though these last ones are further along in a self-development journey usually.
All types of these self-help groups come in different ways to attend. You have them completely online for example through skype meetings which now could also be through zoom meetings. You also have them online as facebook groups or twitter groups. Another version which is a lot more personal than the others above for the online atmosphere at least is Wh atsApp groups. These exist as the sole group or sometimes as a back-up to skype meetings for example or in person meetings.
Even though our world has gone online for most things there are still groups that exclusively meet in person. These have been happening way prior to all the online versions.
There is one dynamic here to note that is important. With almost all self-help groups there is no professional present. It’s almost always only people who share the same situation coming together and helping one another.
5. One-of coaching session
This one might be strange to find in this list but it is a form of self-help. There are coaches who offer one-of sessions which can be used to just help you through where you got stuck in your self-help project.
In most coaching trajectories the first session is more to get a lay of the land and get to know one another. To discuss why you’re there and how you would like to be helped. With a one-of session this coaching intake conversation happens way shorter in order to get straight to the point of why you are there and “solving” that question.
If you want a one-of coaching session you can request one via the contact form here! Prices start from €24.20.
6. Self-help Webinars
Last but certainly not least are the self-help webinars. These webinars can be of educational nature or of guidance. Though lots of them are also being used as introductory leads into a course or for a book.
The webinars can be live with a chat where you can immediately ask your questions and interact with the host. While there are also ones where the actual webinar has been recorded but the chat is still open for questions, the answering of the question could happen in real time but for example also later via email.
A word of caution
Not all the self-help that has made it is way to the public is up to par to actually help you. Some of them are even downright fraudulent others are just not right for you but might be right for someone else. It is for this reason why it is important to do your research before purchasing or trusting someone with helping you make potential life changing decisions. I wrote a thread on twitter about how to go about trying to make sure that your purchase is right for you which you can find by clicking on the tweet below.
I’ve also written about the 9 Dangers Of Popular Psychology You Should Know which can also help you out. As I said in the beginning, looking at your options prior to purchase is a really smart move!
Self-help has more options than the ones that make it to your screens the most, only when you know about them can you find the best self-help for you.
Love,
DCPR.
