Summer lends itself for lots of cool, fun and crazy adventures but also for tamer ones. I am usually very beat at the end of a hot summer day but since it’s summer I do want to enjoy the warmth the sun brings as much as possible and thus not turn in immediately. Even though sleep is important, a few hours stolen for a seasonal bound activity is not that bad. Especially if it helps sort of cross off an activity on the ‘’one-day’’ list. The activity being crossed off is going to an open air cinema. There’s isn’t one in my direct neighborhood/city or at a reasonable driving distance so I had to do a little bit of DIYing to get it done.
A little backstory before I get to the DIYing and open air cinema part of this post. Ever since I’ve seen the movie The Wedding Planner where Jennifer Lopez and Matthew McConaughey watch an old school movie sitting on a tree I have wanted to recreate that moment for myself. Well I have succeeded even though I did it with my girlfriends instead of the love of my life. Still counts though❗ Also the feeling of being a girl/guy in the ‘50’s or ‘60’s is also there at least I had that feeling which I very much loved, to be completely honest.
I watch movies a lot. I have even gone back in time and watched a movie in cinema that was in the cinema before I was born. Read about it here!
To create your own open air cinema at home you need the following:
- TV
- HDMI cable
- Laptop
- Garden furniture
- Blankets
- Snacks
I think once you have seen the list of things you need it gets pretty straight forward as to how to set up your own at home open air cinema. I’m going to walk you through it regardless before telling you how amazing it was (can you tell that I’m psyched?). So first thing is to make sure there is no rain forecasted because as you know electronics and rain do not mix at all❌. Next you need a garden or an outside space where you have access to electricity to plug-in the TV. Get your TV outside and connect it to your laptop with the HDMI cable. Comfify (I know this is not a real word, but I use it all the time so it is from now on!) your seating area as you are at home you have plenty of choice on how to do that. I actually have a garden couch which is super comfy,I also brought out a blanky because we did this just as the sun was setting and blankies are ideal for that late night soft breeze. There you have it your own open air cinema at home.
We choose the movie, 🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁🥁, The Wedding Planner. Cheesy, I know but it just felt highly appropriate. It was a girls night after all. Here is one benefit of the at home part of the open air cinema you can be in your chill wear and as comfortable as you can possibly get. The movie itself is incredibly fun and also nostalgic for us ‘90’s babies. By the time we started watching it was dusk which added a very cosy warm, dare I say romantic?, vibe.
Watching a movie outside gives an entirely different feeling than watching it at the cinema or just inside, because in the background you can still hear the world, if you get what I mean? You’re not just hearing people talk as you would in a noisy movie theater but we were also hearing cars, birds and at some point the ice cream truck which prompted us to pause the movie to go get some. Another added advantage is that you decide when the pause is. All these elements gave it something special and such a summery feel. Definitely worth repeating next summer.
Creating an open air cinema at home is the perfect way to end a summer day if you ask me.
Love,
DCPR.
