As much as I believe that self-love should be practiced everyday it can happen that you need a self-love boost. Actually self-love should be part of your lifestyle completely but I understand that when first starting your self-love journey it’s easier to go for self-love treats. With these you’ll make yourself feel loved instantly and inch your way towards fully practicing self-love. Whether you need a boost or you’re just starting these self-love treats can help you achieve both. The important thing about this treat yourself is that you do this by yourself for yourself.
1. Watch a film you identify with
This one seems obvious but bear with me. It’s true that sitting down to watch a movie will probably make you feel good. I mean it’s relaxing, you probably have some delicious snacks and you can completely zone out for however long the movie is, so really what’s not to like? You can make this a self-love activity by choosing a movie where you can either relate to the/one of the character(s) or the storyline.
Seeing someone go through what you are going through can give your self-love a boost by putting you in touch with your emotions. It’s a way to connect with your emotions without having to do the heavy lifting immediately. You can ease your way in as often when something resonates with you it can linger in your mind and give you something to think about later on. Perhaps it can even motivate you to try something new in relation to the film.
Next to a film being able to provide you with a low-key way of connecting with your feelings, it can also provide a moment of disconnection if you are the type to ruminate. You won’t be disconnecting from yourself, it’s a disconnect from the constant mauling over the same thing which can cause a negative pause to your life. While watching the film you’ll be pausing life while still being able to connect to yourself and could even be shown a new way of looking at things depending on the film you watched.
Here is the film I use to boost my self-love and recharge my batteries at the same time, click here to read all about it.
2. Become your own self-love Michelin Chef
[Do not use this self-love treat if you engage in emotional eating, it will harm you more than help you.]
I want to preface this by saying that you don’t actually have to be a michelin star chef to do this. I managed to succeed with this and I am someone who has literally started a fire in the kitchen so you should be fine (highly don’t recommend setting your kitchen alight). Everyone has food or snacks they absolutely love but can’t or don’t eat regularly for whatever reason. I say throw those reasons to the wind and get yourself that food/snack or make it yourself if you can.
Throwing caution to the wind is something I have been doing for years now and it all started with the realization described here. Perhaps it’s something you should do more often too?
Before I continue there’s a little “but” here. You have to take your own health in account here, you can’t feel loved by yourself if you are purposely ruining your health. So eat within rhyme and reason of your own health. We’re on a self-love journey here so we have to keep honoring all aspects of it.
To continue, there are a few ways to make you actually feel self-loved through the food/snack you are treating yourself to. Number one being it is your ultimate favorite. Number two; it would be easy to just get it or make it and then immediately dive in. No!! The trick is to make it a moment, an event for yourself. A self-love moment. Create a moment when you can settle down and unwind from your day to then treat yourself to this delicious self-love food/snack.
Make sure you can savour the moment. Make it a moment to remember. This is why you need to do it at a slow-paced moment. A moment that’s all about you and that delicious food/snack you got for yourself. This brings us to point number three which might be the most important one; do not create this moment for yourself as a reward for something. The sole reason to create this moment for yourself has to be to give yourself a self-love boost or to make yourself feel loved by you.
Curious about my cooking? Here is a rendition of it sans fire. Or if you’re more into a treat yourself that was a 100% success you can check out this post where I treated myself without risking my house.
3. Make yourself smell the self-love treat
This self-love treat is one you can do in a lot of different ways. I don’t know if this is common knowledge but smell is a very powerful sense. It can trigger entire memories good or bad and it can make you avoid whole areas without you consciously knowing that you’re avoiding them. Those are just two reasons why using smell as a self-love treat is such a good idea.
The way this works is to get your favorite smell somewhere in your permanent surrounding. I think this is best illustrated by using me as an example. I love the smell of (some) roses so what I did was get myself some scent packages and stuck them in my closet, especially around my feel good clothing. Now every time I go to pull something out I feel a waft of lovely roses. As a bonus my clothes also smell amazing. Every morning I’m greeted by this lovely smell.
Another scent based self-love treat I set up was a home scent. To be honest this one was kind of a hit and miss. I first had one that would spray a fragrance every hour or so but the noise freaked me out and the smell wasn’t as strong as I would like it. I decided to switch to fragrance sticks and those are a massive success. Everytime I pass it I can smell it, but not only that I smell it at random times and places in the house which is really really nice.
The fact that I can smell it at random is the greatest reason why this works so well as a self-love treat. It’s a random reminder that you did something nice for yourself to show your self-love. It’ll keep coming at random because you always get used to the smells in your house. I won’t go into the nitty-gritty of the biology and psychology behind it but it has a lot to do with keeping you safe and sparing brain capacity.
By making a moment out of going to the store or ordering online (I would only recommend this if you are already familiar with the scent) you’ll create a memory that is attached to the smell and every time you smell that distinct smell you’ll be reminded of your self-love.
Hope you can use these self-love treats to your advantage to improve your self-love journey.
Love,
DCPR.
