Trying Syrian Cuisine made by Real Syrians

Even though Syria is in the news more often than not, I know nothing about their culture. At the MIX17 event I found out it is possible to try their cuisine. Remember me telling you about one of the speakers who is from Syria and founded his own company? What I didn’t tell you is that they organize dinners, brunches and do catering. As I’m always up for dinner there was no hesitation whether or not I should book a table. I’ll confess, I was left intrigued and thus had to find out more about the Syrian cuisine and culture.

Normally when I go out to dinner I already know what I’m going to eat because I have CIA searched the restaurant in order to find the menu. I did the same this time around however I was left empty handed. No menu to be found, meaning I had to actually be patient and wait for the day of the dinner to find out what Syrian cuisine is all about.. You can’t even begin to imagine how much I wondered about this dinner.  Luckily the menu was on the table, so as soon as we were seated I could start browsing. Much to my delight!

I obviously didn’t know what most of the dishes were because they were given their original names, which I applaud them for. Not knowing didn’t last long as the first dish came out quite quickly. The dinner was lovely with a nice variety. You really get a chance to try different parts of the Syrian cuisine. The best thing about it is that you are not eating an interpretation of Syrian cuisine made by non-Syrians. No, you are eating Syrian cuisine made by Syrians. Another great advantage is that they can properly explain what is on your plate.. I found that to be rather handy.

The night only had one hiccup if I can even call it that. For this to make sense you have to know something first. I am a lightweight who eats like a lightweight as well. Now what happened was that after the first starter, the next item on the menu came right after. That obviously raised some worry whether we would be working through the entire menu. That is a very daunting thought for a lightweight, however they went about it mighty clever with great portion control. Enabling you to try everything on the menu without having to be forklifted out.

Apart from that little scare I had a wonderful evening with lovely food. The atmosphere in the restaurant was very nice and the people even nicer. I do have to add one more thing. For those of you who love desserts as much as I do. I mean I consider starting the day with a piece of cake perfectly okay, from time to time though! Anyways, the Syrian desserts is definitely something you want to add to the list of things you have tried. I took mine to go, so the next day I got to be as happy as the night before. YUM!

My Story Of I is now a whole lot richer and fuller.
